As an aside I am wonder if the hiss/white noise I am experiencing is due to the power cable. It didn’t seat that well in the port when I set it up, took effort to put it in place but didn’t feel that secure. I might try another cable to see if that resolves the issue. The shop is looking at the on-board diagnostics to see if they can see any issues
I dont think seating it will cause a hiss? If the BSTH is completely standalone and does not have a TV panel hard-mounted to it, and can you can disconnect, pick it up and place it on a power socket away from your current supply – particularly one on a different breaker if you can – that should identify if the BSTH is faulty or not?
My question is if it’s worth it as a standalone all in one atmos system. From the reviews the Atmos from the Theatre hasn’t been as impressive as the Sennheiser Ambeo. It sounds like it catters more to people with Beolab speakers.
Honestly, I think it is the usual story – price. These magazines want everything super-cheap and offer a subjective justification in their own way. Sennheisers advertising revenue has to be justified.
B&O has always been a lot more expensive but always comes with added extras. Think Beovisions with PUC, motorised stand and a Surround Processor compared to well…a TV panel, internal speakers on a plastic stand with a plastic remote? There is no real comparison or off-set for the added value.
The BSTH brings a lot of the typical fully-loaded Beovision features with the ability to recycle panels often. This also includes adding or re-tasking Beolabs to the system. It keeps legacy systems alive for a lot of us. Frankly – and perhaps most can determine from my rampant comments of the forum recently, I am greatly relieved for the BSTH. I was greatly concerned as to what was going to replace the Eclipse. Harmony is not may favourite design and way way too expensive for the frill of rotating screen loudspeakers. The Stage and Contour are to me, Beovision dead-ends in so far as product integration.
With the BSTH, I can also see my financial exposure to Beovisions reduce from circa +£10k every 5 year replacement (~£2k/year, may be more if parts run-out quickly – i.e. Gen1 Eclipse) to one where replacing the screen only could significantly reduce that overhead to less than £400k/yr.
People ultimately have a choice. Go buy the Sennheiser Ambeo if you feel it is “better”? As a standalone, it may well be better for you and your needs but don’t pretend these “written” reviews are in anyway objective. Most of them – including those who have done the BSTH as well as other Soundbars are Chancers with a GoPro and a mic putting out an opinion sitting in a shop.
For me, I’ve re-discovered B&O Video and I’m happy that my long-standing investments are still relevant for some time to come.

Indeed. The BSTH blows the Eclipse out of the water. In the 4-5years I had one, I had the soundbar muted and relied on phantom BL90 and the BL3.
As a side note, and thinking how the BSTH manages sound distribution, I think there is a good case for B&O to refresh the BL14 concept (but without the sub) i.e. a very small discrete loudspeaker set for added spatial/ATMOS ambience without dominating the viewing room more than it may already be?
Hopefully B&O are paying attention?
Thanks for confirming. Yes I’m on auto update but v3.1.0 as far as I can ascertain is from April this year.
I may be wrong on this but I think
3.1.0 = BL90 firmware
v0.23.699 = BeoApp control??
There was also an update for BL90 yesterday.
I’m still stuck on v3.1.0.1187 (april 22). What V. are you now showing?
To be more precise about my Powerlink issue with the Theatre: When i have the BL90 connected and setup in the App as Powerlink, the room compensation measurement process for a 5.1 speakergroup using the microphone is stopped as soon as the signal hits the Powerlink connected BL90’s. It works though, when the BL90’s are set up and connected as wireless to the Theatre in the App. Then it is possible to get a room corrected speaker group preset and the process functions as expected.
Ive just been playing with this very aspect (I think).
This is what I have done so far, and have yet to test it critically.
- Listening Positions parameters
- Run Room Sense BSTH/BL90/BL3 surround setup. Speaker Preset to 0 (Auto). Rename to “Video”. Set as Start-up Default 5.1
- Re-Run Room Sense but with BSTH/BL3 omitted i.e. BL90 Only. Speaker Preset to 1 (Narrow beam I think). Rename to Narrow
- Duplicate BL90 Narrow Listening position, Rename to wide, Speaker Preset to 2 (wide beam)
- As above for Omni, Speaker Preset to 3
There is a bug in the Beoapp that can only display 1.5 buttons for listening positions. However, if I have this right, you can operate BL90s in true narrow mode with two front loudspeakers only, and flick into Video mode, with the correct delays/sync and fire-up all loudspeaker sets including the BSTH.
If you are firing up the BL90s from a 3rd Party device, they (I think) operate with the original calibration installed from the BL90 room Sense and not that of the Theatre.
Again, I have asked B&O to look into this and sort-out the mish-mash they have now made.
As a final note, please connect your BL90s via Powerlink rather than WISA. They and your ears deserve them.
Ethernet into the input port then two ethernet cables out (one to Apple TV, the other to xbox series s) HDMI from TV e-Arc to Theatre, two HDMI inputs A has Apple TV and B has xbox series s Nothing else connected.
So the simple stuff is to disconnect each one of the External device sources at the HDMI/LAN level behind the TV. Im sure you have done this already and I apologise if I come across as trying to teach you to suck eggs!!
Check the eARC. HDMI cable. I dont think the B&O supplied cable is directional but check just in case.
If that does not do anything, try running a long extension lead/power cord and power the BSTH and TV panel from different power sockets on different lines if you can?
The only reason I state this is I had a similar problem with my BL90s in the upper treble domes. (connecting with 3rd party audio separates, cables, and the Beovision). It was a dog to find the fault and only stopped when I plugged my 3rd party separates into a power regenerator to clean the power supply. Something was causing a ground loop hum.
There may be something much simpler (faulty BSTH maybe) but these are first things to test before calling your Dealer.
Reading and understanding the Technical Sound Guide of BS Theatre and BL90 may help … will try to do that the next days.
Do you have a link for this? I know of the TV/surround guides but not for the Theatre specifically?
B&O have just issued a BS Theatre update right now of v2.3.4.

OK, lets see if this puts you on a track worth considering…..
- BV Eclipse (Mk1 with cr@ppy LG Music Player)
- BL90, Powerlink from BV to BL90
- Equals cr@appy sound. No other BS product worthy in my opinion – including Core.
- I purchased an Auarlic G2 stack, feed BL90s via XLR. Happy but have to control 3rd party products which are not fully integrated into B&O Ecosystem.
I added the BL90s to the BeoApp (if you had the original BL90 App – as good – even better). Placed BL90 Line-sense into Automatic. Next Powerlink, XLR, SPDIF etc…Set Thresholds and time-outs.
So for TV, Theatre all works properly with distributed sound. I have communicated to B&O (feedback as Beta user in Theatre-BeoApp) about Wide/Narrow/Omni settings and sync-ing needs some attention.
For the Auralic system, BL90s fires-up, hits narrow mode etc…. I use an Essence Remote in IR mode for volume control, Auralic DAC set to 100% XLR output, use the Auralic App for tracks, albums etc…. BS Core definitely not required or missed.
The only issue I had to watch (not tested on the BSTH yet), is when listening to Auralic music on the BL90, going to Sleep, the BL90s have a 60 sec minimum time-out to Standby. Firing up the Eclipse before the 60sec time-out, it recognised the BL90s as not available. This could be corrected on the BR1 control by List >> Speaker >> Video setting (video in my BR1 was to go to 5.1 sound, with Wide dispersion on the BL90).

do I understand correctly that you can use the Theatre without any wings? does it look weird with gaps?
The BSTH is designed for a 55in screen (without wings). Wings can be purchased separately (at the stupid price of £800 a set) for 65in and 77in screens. I did consider at one point buying the 77in wing-set to go with a 65in screen and go for the Eclipse look. However, common sense was flicked back in to “high” mode.
I find the gap between screen and BSTH almost not noticeable from the fret width upward. DHA’s picture probably accentuates matters (non-LG screen, bright backlight behind the panel and eye-level at the joint).
You can fiddle endlessly to (limited) adjust the gap, how forward/backward/Tilt and twist you want the panel. The hardest adjustment is to jockey the ends of the panel to match the sides of the BSTH.
Photo below is my Panel set-up at the viewing position.
This Photo shows how the BSTH tries to hide its bulk and how relatively close the Panel goes to the wall. The SMI and out-going cables drive that distance.
I’ve gotta say, (I would say that wouldn’t I?), that this product comes across as a pretty decent offering from B&O. The design is out there, unusual, quirky but it works. The TV is packed with tech and sounds very good. I was even expecting the App to be useless. Yes, there a few things missing but as a software driven product, it works surprisingly well for a B&O product, a few weeks out of the box.
Does anyone have a white noise/hiss from the centre speaker in their theatre? im trying to troubleshoot mine. It’s not source caused as it happens on all sources and with nothing connected. Have performed a reboot and factory reset but no improvement
Please give a description of connections of sources and cables. Sounds like there is some dirty noise getting into your system?
I have the Theatre, BL90, BL3 in my system . It all works (to an extent), set up in the classical way. The only thing that is different is the core? What is that used for and how is it connected and controlled?
Appears it is CEC controllable to a degree…
The PUC control goes up to Apple TV gen4. I’m not sure if that is the latest model or if there is a later model.
From what I have read on this forum, if a device is HDMI-CEC compliant, it can be natively contolled
-The speaker roles are noticeably limited when compared with what’s available on the Beosystem 4. For example, I was going to add more speakers for the Wide roles, but Wide is not an option for external speakers. Also, there is no role for middle hight speakers — only front and back height. The Dolby Atmos setup diagrams provide for the additional “left and right surround 1” roles — a back counterpart to the front “wide” roles. However, those roles are not options.

Which are the possible ‘Speaker Roles’ at time being? Can you set up the system (the speaker connections) manually and make a micophone calibration after that?

there are two levels to consider. Speaker Roles and Sound mode. Speaker Roles can be edited in terms of positioning (either at listening height, or those above).
Sound Roles are TV, Music, Movies, Games, Night and Beosonic. As you drill down to each of these roles, you enter Beosonic/advance to change role tones and ambience. The sound roles can be edited and save but only as the list above . You cannot add/delete these default roles
1a) I would have thought that middle ceiling speaker is a must for Atmos, is this not supported by the Theatre?
1b) does the Theatre support 8K as it is today or will it require hardware updates? As far as
2) which provides best ease of use and control and sound and picture quality, to connect external sources to the Theatre or to the television?
3) can the Theatre control an LG CX? I find the user manual unclear as it states “newer than CX”, does that include or exclude the CX?
4a) how many speakers can be wired to the theatre, I see 4 RJ45 powerlink, is it fair to assume 8 speakers?
4b)And can one assign any speaker position combination for these or will they need to be in pairs
5) is the user experience once all is setup easy like BeoVisions normally are so that all members of the family can use the system?
To the best of my current knowledge:-
1a) I would not get too hung-up on the Atmos thing. It is just a trendy Studio Algo to distribute the sound auralally to give a 3D soundstage. The BSTH does a good job but for me, one is not much different than another??
1b) I dont know about 8K. I hear that the EU in its wisdom has effectively banned 8K because of the significantly greater power consumption. I know both my Eclipse and G2 panel is enough to heat my apartments living space to 21degC!!
2) It depends, but you can connect 3 additional HDMI inputs to the Theatre (HDMI 2 is the eARC to the panel). In my instance, I connect HDMI to the BSTH where I need PUC Control. However, I believe that if you use peripheral equipment with the HDMI-CEC standard, I think it makes no difference where it is connected as it a unifying/integrating standard? I think BSTH/LG G2 Panel have 4 HDMI’s each – of which HDMI B/HDMI2 is reserved for eARC comms.
3) I think only the C2 and G2 Panels are supported. With LG, you need to download the B&O LG App to enable remote control via BR1. I dont know if this LG app is compatible with the CX. But you can test this now I think?
4a) the way the Beoapp seems to work is you can add 4 sets of wired speakers and I think 4 pairs of WISA speakers. When I do a quick test to do a new wired speaker config with a BL2 first, I can add only 1 BL90 to the BL2. I cant add a pair. So I imagine you use 1 of 4 connections adding a subwoofer.
4b) When you add a speaker, you add to that speaker 1 extra unit. This can be identical model, a different model (i.e. BL90 – Front Left and BL3 – Front Right) or it can be solo (just a Bl90 Front left)
5. Like all recent Beovision setups, the operating system is involved. Sound modes, Advanced Sound modes, Listening Positions, Sub Cross-over, distances, steering etc… Also add that you can programme Sound setup to a given source. However, once you have done this, the Beoapp or BR1 makes it very simple to operate. I have added Amazon Music, Prime Video, Netflix, Oppo 103, TV, Radio, Youtube etc….to my system. It all now works with a simple press on the BR1 exactly as I want it. (and more importantly, the Wife gets a device with a simple interaction – on/off/ chan up/down/ vol up/down).
Once you have loaded the app via the LG interface or added devices to the HDMI inputs….
Product Settings >> BeoRemote >> select remote. This list appears….
You can show 10 sources in TV and 10 in music. You can handle and slide each source into order. You can also slide to the hide list
Reading beojeffs account of his new BSTH, it seems he is controlling Apple TV and a Sony UHD with the HDMI-CEC protocol without the PUC. This would mean anything with CEC is controlled anyway and PUC is only required on older non-PUC devices?
The BR1 does not do anything apart from transmitting and receiving comms from the BSTH or other BT controlled B&O products. Listings and settings from the BSTH are loaded from the app, transmitted via the BSTH to the BR1. Therefore, I think there is a good chance you can free a couple of devices from PUC control??
