My Beomaster 1900 has developed a problem with the volume preset.

Sometimes when I turn the unit on, it powers up with the volume on max. The problem seems to be intermittent. Also I notice the preset volume control doesn’t seem to be working. When the unit is not turning on with volume on full, I don’t notice any difference between low, med, and high.

The unit was recapped a couple of years ago and has worked fine until it was put into storage. Now it has developed this new problem.

The volume control works otherwise and is stepping up and down properly.

The preset function is pretty simple as it just pre-programs the counter.

      Any thoughts?

Bad vol.preset switch. (Contact cleaner + use).
Bad connection to the switch (shorted leads if the old connector type).

          Martin:

Is there a scenario with an intermittent switch that can set the volume to 1111?

When the unit is misbehaving, the volume appears to turn on at full. The volume indicator light is fully lit on the right and is receiver is at max volume.

I checked the preset switch and seems fine. The is one of the newer units with the molex connectors to the tone control board.

Could be a bad IC (they rarely fail), but you must measure what is being read in at power up to be sure.

              Martin:

              Thanks for the tip.

Cleaned the switch. It didn’t fix the problem.

Turn out to be bad counter IC. I replaced both. Working now!
