BeoLab 150

BeoLab 150

At the base of the BeoLab Penta column was the BeoLab 150 amplifier with a power output of 175 watts DIN/IEC. This could give your music a tremendous boost, both to the quality and the actual power output. It was ideal if you loved to party but had a relatively small music system. Big power needs careful control – so the amplifier was equipped with Bang & Olufsen’s Dynamic Soft Clipping system. This was a circuit that prevented both distortion and damage to the speaker units by softly rounding off signals that were too powerful. Another circuit prevented damage due to prolonged overloading.

BeoLab 150: Controlled overdrive

On the amplifier itself were buttons for adjusting bass and the level of sensitivity. This meant that you could arrive at a permanent adjustment that matched the room exactly.

BeoLab Penta turned on automatically when it received a signal and also turned itself off three minutes after receiving the last signal. BeoLab Penta had a light display that indicated the volume level and which sound source the music was coming from. This was especially useful with Beosystem 5500 and Beocenter 9500.

BeoLab 150 and 200 were used as part of the BeoLab Penta active loudspeakers range.

Connections:

At the bottom of BeoLab 150 were two clip-sockets and a four pole DIN socket for connecting speakers, a line input phono socket and a mains cable.

BeoLab 3

BeoLab 3

BeoLab 3 is the most compact, versatile loudspeaker in the current Bang & Olufsen range of loudspeakers. Using both ICEPower® and Acoustic Lens Technology, BeoLab 3 represents an important expansion of Bang & Olufsen’s compact loudspeaker range.

The speaker is very versatile and comes with a selection of stands – a floor stand, table stand and wall brackets are all available – which makes it ideal for placing almost anywhere in the house.

BeoLab 3 Floor Stand: Part number 1216511

BeoLab 3 Wall Bracket: Part number 1216766

BeoLab 3 is delivered with a black rubber foot for positioning on a static unit. A new type of PowerLink cable (Mark III) is provided with the speaker (5m) but additional lengths may be purchased separately if required. There is a single PowerLink socket on each BeoLab 3; if connecting to a non-Bang & Olufsen audio system a converter cable may be used to connect at line level.

The speaker fits in price-wise between BeoLab 6000 and BeoLab 8000. It can be used for either main speakers or for rear surround-sound. Its rated output is 250W. The unit looks similar to the BeoLab 2 sub-woofer. The Acoustic Lens Technology is developed from research with the BeoLab 5 active speaker; technology of which was developed in close cooperation with Sausalito Audio.

BeoLab 3 Press Release – January 2004

BeoLab 3: a new, compact loudspeaker with a surprisingly big sound

Bang & Olufsen’s latest loudspeaker is a minor acoustic masterpiece. With its compact dimensions, it fits in anywhere – and it has a surprisingly big sound for its size. “I’m very pleased to introduce our latest loudspeaker, BeoLab 3. It incorporates many of the technological features of our existing loudspeakers, including our top-of-the-range model BeoLab 5, which has been met with a tremendous enthusiasm from the international trade press. The many ways in which BeoLab 3 can be used and positioned will make these features more widely available, so more people can benefit from them” says President and CEO Torben Ballegaard Sørensen

BeoLab 3 is a highly versatile loudspeaker. It can be positioned in many different ways. Using the stand and fittings supplied, you can mount the loudspeaker on the wall or put it on a shelf or in a bookcase. You can also put BeoLab 3 wherever you like on the floor on its aluminium stand, the design of which matches the rest of Bang & Olufsen’s products. Depending on their use and the décor of the room, the loudspeakers can be placed to emphasise their distinctive design or so that they blend in with the surroundings. At the same time, the complex technology that produces its surprisingly big sound makes BeoLab 3 an obvious choice when it comes to stereo loudspeakers for your music system or the front and rear loudspeakers of a surround-sound home cinema set-up.

Greater acoustic freedom

A rather striking feature of the design is the acoustic lens on top of BeoLab 3. One advantage of the Acoustic Lens Technology* is that it permits greater freedom as regards positioning without impairing the sound quality and it also limits sound reflections from the floor and ceiling, delivering more precise reproduction. Creating such a big sound with such small loudspeakers was possible only by using a combination of Bang & Olufsen’s skills in the field of acoustics. The sides of the loudspeaker function as additional, passive speaker units and allow BeoLab 3 to move greater quantities of air (and therefore to reproduce lower notes) than would otherwise be possible in such a small, compact cabinet.

The built-in Bang & Olufsen ICEPower® amplifier modules guarantee the necessary power without generating the degree of heat given off by traditional amplifiers. BeoLab 3 was designed by Bang & Olufsen’s Chief Designer David Lewis, and besides its acoustic lens, the loudspeaker is also designed along the same lines as BeoLab 2, Bang & Olufsen’ s subwoofer, in terms of shape: a combination of a cube and a sphere. The cabinet is made of aluminium, with a matt black surface.

Mounting Options

From launch, BeoLab3 was available with circular desk mounting hoops, floor stands with internal cable routing and table stands.

BeoLab 4

BeoLab 4

BeoLab 4

“BeoLab 4 is a compact, flexible loudspeaker concept at a highly attractive price point. In addition to its use with the BeoSound 4 music system, BeoLab 4 can also be combined with PCs or be part of other Bang & Olufsen music systems. Offering a large number of positioning options, BeoLab 4 is scheduled for initial roll-out in the second quarter “- taken from Bang & Olufsen’s Financial Report, August 2005 .

BeoLab 4 was launched in November 2005 as a new entry-level loudspeaker concept. They are designed to be discreet yet offer exceptional performance for their size. They can be used as stereo loudspeakers with an audio system, as front or rear loudspeakers within a surround sound set-up, and as link room loudspeakers or with a computer.

BeoLab 4 are 2-way stereo loudspeakers with a 2cm tweeter and a 10 cm bass loudspeaker. Each driver is powered by a 30 Watt ICE power amplifier. They also feature a placement switch to adapt the bass performance depending on their position in the room. This is similar in operation to BeoLab 2 with a wall-mounted, corner or free-standing position. In line with the versatile concept, BeoLab 4 adapts its bass performance to the specific placement in the room. A switch is set to match a wall-mounted position, a corner position or a free-standing position to ensure optimum performance. BeoLab 4 features Adaptive Bass Linearization (ABL), Bang & Olufsen’s proprietary technology for ensuring superior bass performance from loudspeaker cabinets with modest physical dimensions.

Pyramid power to super charge your laptop

With a 3.5 mm mini jack Line input, dedicated PC mode and low price, BeoLab 4 is a realistic solution to be sold with non B&O masters such as PCs or as even for portable MP3 players There are two new adaptors to support connection to these sources:

6270273 2 – piece set of 3.5 mm mono mini plug > RCA M, for BL4 w/ non B&O system.

6270250 3.5mm stereo mini plug > 2 x 3.5 mono mini plugs for PC connected to BL4s

Placement

To support the versatility of the loudspeaker, BeoLab 4 is supported with a range of stand options. On its built-in foot, BeoLab 4 can easily be placed on a bookshelf or a table. Furthermore, BeoLab 4 can be mounted on the wall or to the ceiling by means of the optional wall and ceiling brackets. Finally BeoLab 4 can be placed on a dedicated floor stand.

Colour options

The covers are made of a special fabric and will be available in 4 different colours – Black, Dark Grey, Red and Blue. Thanks to a simple snap-on system, it is easy for the customer to change to another colour if required.

With the release of the BeoLab 4 loudspeaker, Bang & Olufsen has once again shown that excellent sound is wonderfully compatible with the design and crafting of a compact and intriguing cabinet. BeoLab 4 will be available towards the end of 2005. Despite its modest size, the pyramid-shaped BeoLab 4 is a true hi-fi loudspeaker, with the amplifier built in to the loudspeaker unit and a range of Bang & Olufsen proprietary acoustic technologies ensuring the best performance. In terms of design and placement options, BeoLab 4 is the perfect accompaniment to the new BeoSound 4 audio system, and the small dimensions suit well as rear speakers for home cinema, or as superbly performing PC loudspeakers.

Flexibility is the key

“In today’s audio market, flexibility is central to our business. Our customers expect to be able to hear music wherever they may be, without any diminishment in quality,” says Michael Jensen, Product Manager, Bang & Olufsen. “BeoLab 4 complements our other BeoLab loudspeakers and sound solutions by ensuring that listening experiences from the living room to the bedroom or home office are of an equally high quality.”

It is often unnecessary to use large loudspeakers as the rear speakers for home cinema, and BeoLab 4 can fill this role. Furthermore, BeoLab 4 has a dedicated PC mode, making it a superbly performing PC loudspeaker. Bang & Olufsen’s well-known BeoLink system ensures the total integration of all entertainment at home, and BeoLab 4 is a great solution for remote loudspeakers that can be placed discretely around the house and linked to home entertainment systems.

A perfect blend of expression and technology

BeoLab 4 is available with a range of stand options for the wall, floor or table that complement the stands for the new BeoSound 4 audio system. BeoLab 4 can even be tastefully hung from the ceiling, and the cloth covers are available in four colours. Three bass presets ensure that BeoLab 4 performs according to its placement in a room – whether in a corner, against a wall, or free-standing in the room.

BeoLab 4 is, like all BeoLab loudspeakers, an active loudspeaker, meaning that the amplifier unit is placed in the cabinet to ensure no deterioration of signal strength between the amplifier and loudspeaker unit. The ICEpower amplifier unit used is a patented Bang & Olufsen solution, allowing for an ultra-compact design, high power output, and cool operation. Adaptive Bass Linearisation, another proprietary Bang & Olufsen technology, offers superior bass performance from modestly- dimensioned loudspeaker cabinets. In addition, circuit protection technology ensures BeoLab 4 never overheats.

Mounting Options

BeoLab4 were conceived as a table top speaker with optional floor stands featuring a stainless steel turned pole. Cables could not be internally routed within the stand and so a silver sock was supplied, which proved not to be popular.

BeoLab 11

BeoLab 11

BeoLab 11

The Beolab 11 is the new lower priced subwoofer, designed in particular to accompany the Beovision 10. It utilises a design principle seen in other subwoofers of having identical units firing in opposite directions and hence making the structure more stable. Indeed the B&W PV1 does just this using B&O ICE amplification.

B&O however have added a new twist to the equation by having the two 130mm drive units firing inwardly and so allowing the external casing to be made from the same polished aluminium seen in the Beovision 10.

Amplification is via a 250W ICE unit and so the speaker can be seen to fit below the Beolab 2 in the range.

Mounting Options

As a result of the balanced drive units, the Beolab 11 will be offered both as a floor standing model and with a wall bracket. This is again designed to match the Beovision 10. The Beovision 10 in both 40″ and 46″ versions is designed so that it can be used as a stand alone set but still utilise the subwoofer output.

This should add the lower frequencies not able to be produced due to the small speaker enclosure of the Beovision 10.

The Beolab 11 will stand just 320mm high on the floor stand. The cross over frequency and bass lift is set with a collection of switches on the base. There is a Powerlink connection and two Powerlink outputs so it can be used in a stereo system.

BeoLab 9

BeoLab 9

BeoLab 9

After much anticipation, Bang & Olufsen have released the BeoLab 9. This acoustic lens speaker had been expected for some time, and it effectively replaces BeoLab 1 which was discontinued.

The design of BeoLab 9 continues B&O’s move away from elegant though easily imitated column loudspeakers to shorter, rounder forms with larger cabinet volumes and better potential for strong bass performance. B&O’s distinctive acoustic lens is also present, and the speakers’s height means that it is perfectly positioned at ear-level when the listener is seated.

The acoustic lens is cast from zinc and plated with matt chrome. Its prominent position gives the speaker a slightly hunched appearance – but B&O compare it to a lighthouse. The overall proportions are pleasing and there are some very nice details. For example, the power LED is concealed inside the acoustic lens, and the cooling fins/vents at the rear match the curve of the cabinet. The majority of the cabinet is fabric covered – black will probably be the most popular choice here, but it is also available in dark grey, blue and red.

There are three drivers: a 10” bass unit in an 18 litre enclosure, a 5” mid-range unit in a 4 litre enclosure and a 0.75” treble unit in the acoustic lens. All drivers are separately amplified, but there is only one ICEpower amplifier of 500W which drives the bass unit. The mid-range and treble units each have their own 100W analogue hybrid amplifier.

BeoLab 7-1

BeoLab 7-1

BeoLab 7-1

Hi-fi television acoustics

Packed with advanced technology, BeoLab 7 is, quite simply, the most powerful stereo speaker ever developed for TV. With six individual driver units, all powered by their own digital ICEpower amplifier, BeoLab 7 delivers an unequalled sound performance for your TV viewing. The beam-shaped loudspeaker below the screen provides superb acoustic performance and signifies the presence of sound as an integral part of your viewing experience. Musically, the speaker rivals many hi-fi systems, and is quite capable of being used as a BeoLink speaker.

The natural fit

BeoLab 7 is specially developed for BeoVision 7 to contribute the ultimate stereo sound performance to the viewing experience. BeoLab 7-1 is the natural accompaniment for the BeoVision 7-32 LCD television, while the broader beam of BeoLab 7-2 is designed for BeoVision 7-40. In addition, BeoLab 7 stereo loudspeakers fit naturally under the BeoVision 4 plasma screen, or under a projection screen. In this application, the speaker can be either wall-mounted or placed on a special tabletop stand.

Colours to match

Long and lean, BeoLab 7-1 and BeoLab 7-2 look at home under a BeoVision 7 or BeoVision 4, or as part of a projection screen setup. The shorter BeoLab 7-1 is best suited for the BeoVision 7-32” screen. The loudspeaker cabinet is made from a single piece of aluminium and coated in a resilient black soft-touch lacquer. The perforated aluminium front grill now comes anodised in five different colours: Light and dark grey, blue, red and black.

A firm grip on powerful sound

A special three-way bass reflex construction incorporates six individual units – two each for treble, mid-range and bass. Each driver is powered by a unique built-in ICEpower amplifier, delivering a combined effect of 750 watt. In addition, BeoLab 7-1 and 7-2 are equipped with thermal protection circuits and Adaptive Bass Linearisation (ABL), which ensures maximum performance without distortion, even at very high volume. Bang & Olufsen has a quarter of a century of experience making loudspeaker cabinets from extruded aluminium. This technique allows for very rigid and compact enclosures with powerful sound performance.

Note that BeoLab 7-1 was designed to be used with the BV4-37 and BV4-42. The wider BeoLab 7-2 may be used with the larger-version BeoVision 4: BV4-50 and BV4-65.

Mounting Options

All four versions of BeoLab 7 were designed for incorporation with Bang & Olufsen’s motor stand options.
